Warning Signs of Heat Exhaustion

avoid heat exhaustion

If you’ve been exposed to high temperatures for a long period of time and are not drinking adequate amounts of water, than you could be at risk for heat exhaustion. Stay safe this summer and recognize the following common signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion!

Common signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion:

  • Confusion
  • Dark-colored urine (which indicates dehydration)
  • Dizziness
  • Fainting
  • Fatigue
  • Headache
  • Muscle cramps
  • Nausea
  • Pale skin
  • Profuse sweating
  • Rapid heartbeat

How to treat heat exhaustion:

  • Immediately get out of the heat and rest in an air-conditioned environment.
  • If you can’t get inside, try to find shade under a nearby tree.
  • Drink plenty of non-caffeinated and non-alcoholic beverages.
  • Remove any tight or unnecessary clothing.
  • Take a cool shower or bath.
  • If such measures fail to provide relief within 30 minutes, contact a doctor because untreated heat exhaustion can progress to heat stroke.

Some summer days can get unbearably hot, so make sure to drink plenty of water, seek shade when needed, and take action when you are someone you know is experiencing any signs or symptoms of heat exhaustion.
