DID YOU KNOW… Osteoarthritis and the quality of sleep are related

I know what most of you are thinking. Obviously there is a relationship. When we are in pain, it only makes sense that we will sleep less. And you would be right. However, research is showing that there is another connection between OA and the quality of sleep one gets at night. Disturbed sleep can change our perceptions of pain. Researchers think a lack of sleep may trigger inflammatory pathways that exacerbate arthritis pain. Poor sleep can also make you more sensitive to the feeling of pain, making you ache more than normal throughout the following day.

Moral of the story: Make sure you are getting a good night sleep. Give yourself a full 8 hours, avoid tv/computers/other stimulants before bedtime. The better you sleep, the better you will feel the next day. In more ways than one 🙂
